Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS)

Customer: Lockheed Martin (Palo Alto, CA)
 
The IRIS mission is dedicated to understanding the interface between the photosphere and corona, by tracing the flow of energy and plasma through the chromosphere and transition region into the corona using spectrometry and imaging. It launched on June 28, 2013.

SODISM (SOlar Diameter Imager and Surface Mapper) instrument on the PICARD satellite

Customer: CNRS (Paris, France)

PICARD is an investigation dedicated to the simultaneous measurement of the absolute total and spectral solar irradiance, the diameter and solar shape, and to the Sun's interior probing by the helioseismology method. These measurements obtained all along the mission will allow the study of their variations as a function of the solar activity. It launched on June 15, 2010.

 

Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI)

Customer: Lockheed Martin (Palo Alto, CA)

The primary goal of the HMI investigation is to study the origin of solar variability and to characterize and understand the Sun’s interior and the various components of magnetic activity. The HMI investigation is based on measurements obtained with the HMI instrument as part of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission. It launched on February 11, 2010.

MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging (MESSENGER)

Customer: Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (Laurel, MD)

MESSENGER launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., on August 3, 2004. Its mission is to analyze the surface of Mercury, to better understand our own planet. It carries seven instruments, one of which is the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS), a camera with wide and narrow fields-of-view, for monochrome, color and stereo imaging. The mission was a huge success. A video siummarizing the mission can be found here.

The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS)

Customer: ABB Bomem (Quebec, Canada)

CrIS is a Michelson interferometer infrared sounder designed to measure scene radiance and calculate the vertical distribution of temperature, moisture, and pressure in the Earth's atmosphere. CrIS was designed to work in unison with the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS), together they create the Cross-track Infrared Microwave Sounding Suite (CrIMSS). The objective of CrIMSS is to provide global three dimensional soundings of atmospheric temperature and moisture as well as provide data on other geophysical parameters. The Cross-track Infrared Sounder takes high spectral resolution measurements of Earth's radiation to determine the vertical distribution of temperature, moisture, and pressure in the atmosphere.

Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE)

Customer: Lockheed (Palo Alto, CA)

TRACE is a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) mission to image the solar corona and transition region at high angular and temporal resolution. TRACE enables solar physicists to study the connections between fine-scale magnetic fields and the associated plasma structures on the Sun in a quantitative way by observing the photosphere, the transition region, and the corona.

Large Angle and Spectrometric COronagraph (LASCO)

Customer: Naval Research Lab (Washington, DC)

LASCO is one of 11 instruments included on the joint NASA/ESA SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) spacecraft. LASCO was built by an international consortium of four institutions in four different countries:
• Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC
• Max-Planck-Institute for Aeronomy, Lindau, Germany
• Dep’t of Physics and Space Research, Univ. of Birmingham, England
• Laboratoire d'Astronomie Spatiale, Marseille, France

The Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI)

Customer: Lockheed (Sunnyvale, CA)

MDI is a project of the Stanford-Lockheed Institute for Space Research and is a joint effort of the Solar Oscillations Investigation (SOI) in the W.W. Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory of Stanford University and the Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory of the Lockheed-Martin Advanced Technology Center.
SOI and the MDI Team are part of an international collaboration to study the interior structure and dynamics of the Sun. The MDI team was responsible for the design and fabrication, and now for the operation, of the MDI instrument on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft.

Wind Imaging Interferometer (WINDII)

Customer: York University (Ontario, Canada)

Launched on NASA's Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) on September 12, 1991, WINDII is an international project, sponsored by the Canadian Space Agency and the French Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales, in collaboration with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The instrument has the responsibility of measuring the global wind pattern and atmospheric composition at the top of the altitude range covered by the UARS spacecraft.

Modular Optoelectronic Multispectral Stereo Scanner (MOMS-02)

Customer: MBB (Munich, Germany)

MOMS-02 is a 7-channel, high resolution imaging system with four multispectral channels (0.4490.511, 0.532-0.576, 0.645-0.677, and 0.7720.815 µm) with 13.5 m resolution. It was successfully operated during Space Shuttle flight STS-55 from April 26 to May 6, 1993. This was the second generation of this instrument; we also built the filters for MOMS-01, which flew in 1983.
